Committee Minutes
Regular Meeting
January 22nd, 2008
7:00 PM
Attending Members: Greg Suchy, Joseph Colangelo, Al Ference, Mike Pinatti, and Ed Taiman. John Sahi, Jack Smith, Tony Migaldi, and Mike Brunette were also in attendance.
Meeting called to order at 7:45 PM.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes from the previous WRC meeting were reviewed. Ed Taiman made a motion to accept the minutes without changes, which was seconded by Joseph Colangelo. All members were unanimous in approval.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Jack Smith, Tony Migaldi and Mike Brunette of the Willington Little League were present to speak. The following topics were suggested and discussed:
>Opening day for baseball should be April 26th. It should be a “ribbon cutting” event promoting the opening of the RRAC for “official” use.
>The Hall Memorial School Band should be asked to provide music.
>C&T Electric Corporation will provide temporary power for the event.
>Vendors should be invited to help create a “carnival” atmosphere, and to provide food and drinks for purchase by attendees.
>There should be activities for soccer, baseball, and softball players.
>Greg Suchy has volunteered to be the Committee Chairperson to oversee this event. It was suggested that a local politician or businessperson that has contributed in some way to the creation of the RRAC do the ribbon cutting.
DIRECTORS REPORT:
It was suggested that a request be made on the next Recreation Department budget for field maintenance, increasing the present budget by $2,000.00. The WRC discussed the future of the Recreation Department in conjunction with the responsibility of maintaining the new fields. A Parks and Recreation Department will be necessary in the future to properly maintain the athletic fields and other recreation areas. This would alleviate some of the workload for Public Works Department, which will increase with the RRAC coming on line.
OLD BUSINESS:
The basketball program was discussed with the following points made to be taken under consideration:
>A better selection process for creating teams may be necessary.
>Travel teams in most of the age groups could be possible next season.
>John Sahi will check with other local towns that are interested in playing Willington travel teams.
>A real coaching and referee clinic should be held previous to each season. Coaches should be trained in providing drills for practice. Referees should have more extensive training than we have provided in the past. Mike Harnad has created a “living document” which should include this information.
NEW BUSINESS:
John Sahi requested permission to purchase a scoring machine for the fencing program. Joseph Colangelo made a motion to approve the purchase, which was seconded by Mike Pinatti. All members were unanimous in approval.
ADJOURNMENT:
Joseph Colangelo motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Greg Suchy. The meeting adjourned at 8:40PM. The next meeting is scheduled for February 26th, 2008 at 7:00PM at the Town Hall Office Building.
Respectfully submitted 1/24/08
